Having an Identity Crisis? Why Understanding Yourself Matters in Leadership

Hi friends,

Have you ever felt a little lost, like you're not quite sure who you are or what you're doing? You might find yourself clinging to what other people expect, or copying others' personalities to make them your own. It's a feeling I've heard described as "a hole inside me," a place we try to fill with others' identities because we don't know our own.

Like this reddit post below, the person was reaching out to the wider community to find resources to fix his problem, the identity crisis.

Whilst the unsettling feeling, dissatisfaction is often called an "identity crisis," I think of it differently. It's less of a crisis and more of a wake-up call, a nudge from your inner compass telling you it's time for a reset.

In leadership, these moments aren't roadblocks, actually, they're pivotal opportunities for growth. Why? Because understanding yourself is the first and most crucial step to becoming an authentic and effective leader.

Leadership Starts with You

Before you can effectively guide a team, a project, or a company, you must first be able to lead yourself. My mentor always reminds me that I can't expect others to follow a compass I haven't calibrated myself. This self awareness is the foundation of confidence, clarity, and resilience.

It's what allows you to make decisions that are not just strategic, but also aligned with your core values and purpose. It's how you move from being "done being vague" to being able to give a solid, true answer to "who are you and what are your goals?".

For introverts, this is especially important. When you understand your own energy needs and communication style, you can stop "faking it 'til you make it" and start leading with your true strengths. You can create space for reflection, listen deeply, and build trust in a way that feels natural to you.

The Identity Compass: Your Tool for Clarity

To help navigate these moments of self doubt, I've created a framework called The Identity Compass. It's a tool for self reflection that helps you map out the four key building blocks that make up who you are right now. By doing this, you're not just defining yourself, but you're creating a reference point, a solid understanding of your core.

Here’s a quick look at the four quadrants:

  • Biology: Your fundamental, non negotiable needs like health, sleep, and natural energy rhythms.

  • Non negotiables ("Have Tos"): Your essential commitments and responsibilities that give your life structure.

  • Interests: Your passions and pursuits that bring you joy and fuel your energy.

  • Negotiables ("Good to Haves"): Your desires and aspirations that add pleasure and are part of your vision for the future.

By plotting these elements and visualising them out, you can see if your time and energy are aligned with what truly matters to you.

Turning Crisis into Clarity

An "identity crisis" is simply a moment when your inner map no longer matches the terrain of your life. Instead of seeing it as a problem, see it as an opportunity. Use this time to redefine your purpose, embrace your unique skills, and build a leadership style that is genuinely your own.

You can't lead from a place of confusion, better you lead from a place of clarity.

So, if you're feeling a little lost, don't worry. This might just be the moment your inner compass is pointing you toward a stronger, more authentic version of yourself.
